Thanksgiving trip ideas 2026: solo, friends or new people
Sometime in late October the text arrives: "So are you coming home for Thanksgiving?" And you realize you have been putting off the answer. Maybe home is a long, expensive flight for two days of the same conversation. Maybe there is no table to go back to this year. Maybe your friends are all heading to their families and you have four days off with nothing in them.
That is the real story behind most Thanksgiving trip ideas 2026 searches. Thanksgiving is on Thursday, November 26, 2026, and the long weekend gives you up to four days, five with the Wednesday. The best ideas are not only about where: they depend on who you go with. You can go solo, turn Friendsgiving into a trip, or join people who want the same long weekend you do. Below are destination ideas by region, one or two abroad, and the honest version of what traveling that week is like.
Not everyone spends Thanksgiving with family
This is the part nobody says out loud: a lot of people do not have a family Thanksgiving to go to, or do not want the one they have. Google's own autocomplete in the US shows it. Type "thanksgiving trip ideas" and next to "usa" and "east coast" you get "solo thanksgiving trips", "solo thanksgiving trips for singles", "solo thanksgiving trips over 50" and "thanksgiving solo getaways". People are not asking whether it is OK. They are asking where to go.
Maybe flying back costs more than the trip itself, maybe the holiday feels different after a divorce, or maybe you just like the idea of four quiet days somewhere new while everyone else is basting a turkey. None of that is sad. It is a calendar problem: you have the time off, and the people you would normally travel with are busy on exactly those days. If that sounds familiar beyond November, I have no one to travel with goes through the general version.
The 2026 calendar and the days everyone else is flying
Thanksgiving Day is Thursday, November 26, 2026, a federal holiday according to the US Office of Personnel Management. If your employer also gives you the Friday, the window is Thursday to Sunday. Add the Wednesday as a vacation day and you have five.
Now the uncomfortable part: it is also when airports are at their fullest. TSA said Sunday, November 30, 2025, the Sunday after Thanksgiving, was at that point the busiest day in its history, with more than 3.1 million people screened at checkpoints. AAA projected 81.8 million Americans would travel at least 50 miles from home over the 2025 Thanksgiving period, a record, nearly 90% of them by car. AAA had not published its 2026 forecast when we checked on October 29, 2026.
The same AAA forecast gives the pattern worth planning around. Sunday and Monday were the busiest return days, which pushed up return fares, while flying out on Thanksgiving Day itself was cheaper. On the roads, INRIX's analysis for AAA put the worst driving windows on the Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, with minimal traffic expected on Thursday. The 2026 dates are one day later, and the pattern is likely to repeat. So if your trip is not about family, use it: leave on Thursday morning, come back on Saturday morning or late on Monday, and you travel against the crowd rather than with it.
Solo Thanksgiving trips: where it works
Going solo works best somewhere that keeps going on Thursday: a big city or a place built for visitors.
New York City is the obvious one for 2026, because the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade turns 100. It began in 1924 but was canceled in 1942, 1943 and 1944, which is why the 100th parade falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026, with the broadcast starting at 8:30 a.m. ET. Expect it to be packed. It is a good choice if you want the energy of a city on its biggest day, less so if you want quiet.
Death Valley and the California desert are the opposite. The National Park Service gives Furnace Creek an average November high of 77°F and a low of 48°F, and calls winter and spring "very pleasant". Combine it with Joshua Tree or Palm Springs and you have a road trip where nobody expects you at a table.
On the East Coast, a walkable city with plenty of museums, such as Boston, Philadelphia or Washington, D.C., works well alone. Wherever you go, plan Thursday dinner: check which restaurants are open that day and book early rather than hoping to walk in, or stay at a hotel with its own restaurant. It is the one moment you will notice being on your own.
Friendsgiving trip ideas: taking it on the road
"Friendsgiving trip ideas" is in the same list of searches for a reason. If your group already does Friendsgiving at someone's apartment, the next step is to do it somewhere else: a cabin, a rental house, a city none of you know.
The format suits a house more than a hotel. A rental with a kitchen lets you cook one big meal together on Thursday and spend the other days out. In California that might mean wine country or the coast; on the East Coast, a house a few hours' drive from the city, so nobody has to fly on the busiest days. Driving also lets you leave on Thursday morning, when the roads were quietest last year.
Group trips between friends rarely break over the destination. They break over money and who decided what. Agree before anyone books how you split the house and the groceries, and who is cooking what. How to travel with friends and stay friends covers the conversation to have first, and split travel costs app explains how to keep the accounts out of anyone's head.
Joining people who want the same long weekend
The third option sits between the two. You want company for Thanksgiving, but your friends are with their families. So instead of persuading them, you look for people who are free on the same days and want the same kind of trip.
That is what TravelMatch is built for. You post a trip with your destination and dates, say Death Valley from November 26 to 29, and people going the same way can ask to join. Or you ask to join a trip somebody else has posted. You decide who joins your trip. Before accepting anyone you see their profile, your affinity percentage and reviews that can only be left by people who actually traveled with them. Profiles show interests, pace, budget, preferred transportation and accommodation, the age range you prefer to travel with (which counts in the match), and whether someone prefers a women-only group, a mixed one or does not mind. That last one is a preference you read, not an automatic filter.
It also fits the "solo thanksgiving trips for singles" and "over 50" searches: what most people mean is company that is not family, and the age range setting gets you closer to that than a random group would. If the people would be new to you, how to travel with a group of strangers covers what to settle before anyone books.
Going international for Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is an American holiday, which works in your favor in Europe: everything is open on Thursday, and the long weekend is just a long weekend.
The detail most people miss is timing. Many European Christmas markets are already open that week. Vienna's market on Rathausplatz runs from November 13 to December 26, 2026, according to its own site, while Prague's main markets open on November 28. European Christmas markets: when to go has the dates city by city. AAA's 2025 list of top international Thanksgiving destinations was led by Paris and Amsterdam.
The catch is that four days is short for Europe, so add a couple of vacation days. Closer to home, Puerto Rico is a US territory, so you get a Caribbean long weekend on a domestic flight. Either way, remember the TSA's advice for the holiday: have an acceptable ID, a REAL ID or a passport, ready at the checkpoint.
And if the four days only leave you wanting the next long weekend, the calendar rolls straight into winter: New Year's Eve trip ideas covers where to be at midnight, and winter getaways in the USA the cozy trips in between.
