Solo holidays at Christmas 2026: who, not where

Somewhere around the middle of October the question starts: "What are you doing for Christmas?" You open the group chat and everyone already has an answer. One is going to their partner's family, another has the children this year, another is working the 27th. And you have ten days off and nobody to spend them with.

That is what most solo holidays at Christmas 2026 searches are really about. People type «solo holidays xmas 2026» or «singles holidays christmas» into Google, but the destination is rarely the difficult part: the difficult part is who you spend it with. You have three ways to sort that out: put up your own trip and find people free on the same dates, book a singles holiday where someone else has decided everything, or go completely alone. Here is how each one works, and the 2026 calendar that decides how much time you actually have.

Why solo travel over Christmas is a different problem

Any other time of year, «I have no one to travel with» usually means your friends cannot agree on dates. At Christmas it means something more specific: the people you would normally travel with are not available at all, because the season comes with obligations that are not theirs to move. Partners have families, friends have children, siblings take turns hosting.

So the usual fix, waiting a few weeks until somebody's diary opens up, does not work. Christmas is on a fixed date. Either you find company for those particular days or you do not go.

That changes what you are looking for. You do not need a better destination or a cheaper flight. You need people who are free on exactly the same days as you and who want roughly the same kind of trip. If that sounds familiar beyond December, I have no one to travel with goes through the general version of the problem.

The 2026 calendar: ten days off for three days of leave

This year's calendar is unusually generous, and it is worth knowing before you choose anything.

According to gov.uk, in England, Wales and Northern Ireland Christmas Day is Friday 25 December 2026. Boxing Day falls on a Saturday, so the bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December. New Year's Day is Friday 1 January 2027. Take Tuesday 29, Wednesday 30 and Thursday 31 December as leave and you are off from Friday 25 December to Sunday 3 January: ten days in a row for three days of annual leave. In Scotland, Monday 4 January is also a bank holiday, so the same three days give you eleven.

Two details change how you plan it. The first is that Christmas Eve, Thursday 24 December, is not a bank holiday, so leaving on the 24th costs you an extra day of leave. The second is trains. National Rail says there will be no National Rail services on Christmas Day 2026, and on Boxing Day most operators run nothing, with a very limited service from a few. If getting to the airport depends on a train, your realistic departure days are the 24th or from the 27th.

Option one: put up your own trip and find people for those dates

This is the option built around the actual problem. Instead of looking for a destination and hoping the company comes with it, you start from the dates you are free and look for people who are free on them too.

On TravelMatch you post the trip with your dates and destination, for example Prague from 28 December to 1 January, and people going the same way can ask to join. Or you join a trip somebody else has already put up for the same days. Before anyone commits, you see where you match and where you do not: budget, pace, daily rhythm, how you like to plan, accommodation. You can filter by the age range you want to travel with, and reviews can only be written by people who actually travelled with that person.

Once the group is formed, you organise the trip inside the app: the day-by-day itinerary, which anyone in the group can add to, shared expenses with their split, and the group conversation, all in the same place. Flights and accommodation you book yourselves, wherever you like. It is free.

Four nights is a realistic size for this kind of trip. In TravelMatch's own database on 4 October 2026, the median trip organised by users with dates set was four nights, and the window from the Boxing Day bank holiday on Monday 28 December to New Year's Day on Friday 1 January is exactly four nights, with a bank holiday at both ends.

If the people would be new to you, how to travel with a group of strangers covers what to settle before anyone books.

Option two: singles holidays at Christmas

The alternative most people find first, because it is what the search results are full of. Several UK operators that sell holidays only to solo travellers publish dedicated Christmas and New Year departures for 2026, as their own websites show: some in UK hotels with a festive programme, others abroad.

How it works is simple. The operator fixes the dates, the destination, the hotel and what happens each day, including Christmas lunch. You book a place and the group is whoever else booked the same departure. Age range and group size depend on the operator, and some state them while others do not.

The room is the line to check. Policies differ: at least one solo-specialist operator says your own room is included in the price, others pair you with another solo traveller of the same sex or charge extra for a room of your own, and the same trip can have a different policy on a different departure. The single supplement explained sets out the three mechanisms, and group tours for solo travellers covers what to ask about group size and age before paying.

What a package does not include is a choice of who you will spend Christmas Day with. You meet the group when you arrive.

Option three: travelling alone at Christmas

Going completely alone is a real option, and plenty of people do it on purpose. What makes it work at Christmas is planning around the fact that much of Europe shuts for a day or two.

In much of continental Europe, Christmas Eve is the main evening and both the 25th and 26th are public holidays in countries such as Germany and Austria. Shops close and many restaurants do too, while hotels keep running. If you are travelling alone, that is the moment you will notice most, so it is worth booking Christmas Day dinner in advance or staying somewhere that serves it.

Christmas markets are the classic trap. They are Advent markets, so many close on the afternoon of the 24th and do not reopen. Prague is the main exception. European Christmas markets: when to go has the dates, city by city.

If what you are looking for are the best places to travel solo over Christmas, the practical answer is to choose a city where the 25th is quiet but not dead, and to leave the busiest sightseeing for the 27th onwards, when everything reopens.

Solo holidays at New Year: the easier half

If Christmas itself feels like too much, the New Year half is easier to fill. The days between the 27th and the 1st have no fixed family obligations for most people, cities are open, and more people are free to travel than on the 25th. «Solo holidays new year 2026» and «singles holidays new year» appear in Google's suggestions alongside the Christmas ones for exactly this reason.

The 28 December to 1 January window works for every option above: a trip of your own, a New Year departure from a singles operator, or a few days alone in a city that celebrates New Year's Eve outdoors.

Where we fit

TravelMatch is for the first option. You post the trip with your Christmas or New Year dates and destination, find people going the same way, matched on budget, pace and how they plan, and organise it all inside the app: itinerary, expenses and conversation in one place. You choose who joins your trip, and you talk before anyone books.

There is no package to buy, so there is no single supplement either: everyone books their own travel and you decide between you whether to share a room. It is free.

Sources. Bank holiday dates are from gov.uk/bank-holidays, read on 7 October 2026: Christmas Day Friday 25 December 2026, Boxing Day substitute Monday 28 December 2026, New Year's Day Friday 1 January 2027, and in Scotland an additional substitute day on Monday 4 January 2027. Rail information is from National Rail's Christmas travel page on the same date. The existence of Christmas and New Year 2026 departures and room policies was checked on solo-specialist operators' own websites on 7 October 2026; we describe how they work rather than naming them, and no prices are quoted on purpose, because they change and vary by departure. Search phrases are from Google's autocomplete in the UK in October 2026. The trip-length figure is from TravelMatch's own database on 4 October 2026: user-organised trips with dates set, median four nights.

Frequently asked questions

What are the options for solo holidays at Christmas 2026?

There are three. The first is to put up your own trip, with your dates and destination, and find people going the same way: that is what TravelMatch is for, it is free, and you see where you match on budget and pace before anyone books. The second is a singles holiday sold by a specialist operator, where the dates, the venue and the programme are fixed and the group is whoever booked. The third is to go completely alone, which works best somewhere that does not shut down on the 25th.

Are there singles holidays at Christmas in the UK?

Yes. Several UK operators that sell holidays only to solo travellers publish dedicated Christmas and New Year departures for 2026, both in UK hotels and abroad, as you can see on their own websites. They work like any package: fixed dates, a fixed programme and a group made up of whoever booked. If you would rather choose the destination and the people yourself, TravelMatch lets you put up your own trip for the same dates and find people matched on budget and pace.

How many days off do I need over Christmas 2026?

Three, if you are in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. According to gov.uk, Christmas Day is Friday 25 December 2026, the Boxing Day bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December, and New Year's Day is Friday 1 January 2027. Take 29, 30 and 31 December as leave and you are off from Friday 25 December to Sunday 3 January, ten days in a row. In Scotland Monday 4 January is also a bank holiday, so the same three days give you eleven.

Do trains run on Christmas Day in the UK?

No. National Rail says there will be no National Rail services on Christmas Day 2026, as in previous years, and on Boxing Day most operators will run no service at all, with a very limited service from a few. If your trip involves a train to the airport, plan to leave by the 24th or from the 27th, and check the specific operator nearer the time.

Is it strange to travel alone at Christmas?

No. «Travelling alone at christmas», «solo travel over christmas» and «singles holidays christmas 2026» are all phrases Google suggests in the UK, which means plenty of people type them. For most of them the problem is not being alone but being out of sync: partner, family and friends all have plans that do not include a trip. Finding people with the same free dates, which is what TravelMatch does, solves that more directly than picking a destination.

Do I have to pay a single supplement on a Christmas holiday?

Only if you buy a package that charges one. Some solo-specialist operators include your own room in the price, others pair you with another solo traveller or sell a private room as an extra, and the policy can vary by departure. If you organise the trip with people you found yourself on TravelMatch, there is no supplement because there is no operator buying the room: you book your own accommodation and decide between you whether to share.

Are Christmas markets open over Christmas?

Mostly not. European Christmas markets are Advent markets: many close on the afternoon of Christmas Eve and do not reopen, and the big ones in places such as Vienna end on Boxing Day. Prague's Old Town Square market is the clear exception and runs into January. If a Christmas market is part of the plan, go in early December, or choose a city whose market genuinely stays open.

How do I find someone to travel with over New Year?

Fix the dates first and look for people who are free on them, rather than trying to persuade people who already have plans. On TravelMatch you put up the trip with the dates and the destination, or join one that someone else has posted, see where you match on budget, pace and how you plan, and talk before anyone books. The four nights from Monday 28 December to Friday 1 January 2027 are a good window, because both ends are bank holidays across the UK.
