Norwegian fjords cruise from the UK (2027): no-fly guide
It is a wet Tuesday in November and the brochure is open on the sofa. Geirangerfjord on the cover, waterfalls on both sides of the ship, and a departure port you can drive to in an hour. No airport, no liquids bag, no 5am taxi. Then you turn to the price page and read the small line under every number: per person, two sharing. If nobody you know is free that week, on TravelMatch you can post the trip, say a fjords cruise in June 2027, and choose who joins you.
Norwegian fjords cruises from the UK sail mainly from April to September, from Southampton, Newcastle, Liverpool, Rosyth for Edinburgh, Dundee, Portsmouth and London Tilbury, usually for five to ten nights. P&O Cruises, Fred. Olsen and Ambassador Cruise Line all run them, and Princess Cruises and MSC Cruises sail to Norway from Southampton. The big advantage is that you do not fly. Do not expect the northern lights in summer, and if you are travelling alone, the single supplement will matter more than the choice of ship: share a cabin with someone you have found on TravelMatch, or look for a solo cabin early.
Norwegian fjords cruises from UK ports: who sails from where
These are sailings we found on each cruise line's website on 22 October 2026. Prices are "from" fares per person and change week to week, so treat them as a snapshot.
| Port | Cruise lines | Example sailing |
|---|---|---|
| Southampton | P&O Cruises, Fred. Olsen, Princess, MSC | Fred. Olsen's Borealis, 8 nights, 4 May 2027, from £1,999 pp |
| Newcastle | Fred. Olsen, Ambassador | Fred. Olsen's Bolette, 7 nights, 1 April 2027, from £1,499 pp; Ambassador's Ambition, 8 nights, 31 August 2027, from £1,349 pp |
| Liverpool | Fred. Olsen | Borealis, 9 nights, 26 June 2027 |
| Rosyth (Edinburgh) | Fred. Olsen | Balmoral, 5-night bank holiday break, 29 April 2027, from £949 pp |
| Dundee | Ambassador | Ambition, 10 nights, 17 July 2027, from £1,859 pp |
| London Tilbury | Ambassador | Ambience, 8 nights, 21 August 2027, from £969 pp |
| Portsmouth | Ambassador | Ambition, 9 nights, 2 May 2028, from £949 pp |
P&O Cruises sails to Norway from Southampton, and lists the fjords season for Iona as April to September. Princess lists Norway itineraries round trip from Southampton, and MSC names Southampton among its departure ports for fjords cruises. If you are searching for a fjords cruise from Scotland, the options we found were Fred. Olsen from Rosyth and Ambassador from Dundee. For 2028, both Ambassador and Fred. Olsen already have sailings on sale.
Why sailing from the UK changes the whole trip
The obvious part is the flight you do not take. The less obvious part is everything that comes with it: you pack what you like, you can drive or take the train to the port, and the holiday starts when you walk up the gangway rather than after a connection in Copenhagen.
Some lines make the journey to port part of the deal. P&O Cruises says its Select Price fare includes car parking or return coach travel to Southampton on selected round-trip cruises of seven nights or more, and that no tipping is required on board. Ambassador sells itself on regional ports, so you can start closer to home. If you are going by train, the night before is the one to get right: book the rail tickets on Trainline and, if the departure is early, a room near the port on Booking.
The trade-off is the North Sea. You spend time at sea at both ends of the cruise, so check how many port days a seven-night itinerary really has before comparing it with one that starts in Germany or Denmark.
Ship size matters more here than in the Mediterranean. Fred. Olsen says its ships are built for narrower passages and height-restricted fjords, and one of its 2027 sailings goes into the Lysefjord, which it describes as accessible only to smaller ships. Rules are also tightening: Norway's maritime authority requires zero emissions in its World Heritage fjords, Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord included, from 2026 for passenger ships under 10,000 gross tonnage and from 2032 for larger ones. In 2027 big ships still sail in.
When to go: May, June, September, or October 2026?
The fjords season is a summer one. P&O's guide describes long days and average daytime temperatures of around 20°C in summer. May is for waterfalls in full flow: Fred. Olsen sells its early-May sailing on cascading waterfalls and blooming valleys. June brings the longest days, July and August coincide with school holidays, and September sees darker evenings and the end of the season.
If you searched for a Norwegian fjords cruise in October or November, here is the honest answer: on the lines we checked, the fjord sailings run from April to the end of the summer, and the 2026 season is over. A Norway cruise later in the year is a different trip, built around the northern lights and heading much further north.
Will you see the northern lights on a fjords cruise?
Almost certainly not in summer. Visit Norway puts the northern lights season from late August to late March, with most activity around March and April and September and October. It also says that in western and southern Norway, where Geiranger, Flåm and Bergen are, the lights appear only occasionally, during periods of high solar activity. The best places it names are far north: Tromsø, Alta, Lofoten and Bodø.
So a June cruise gives you light at almost midnight, not auroras. A September sailing gives you a small chance on a clear night with strong activity. If the lights are the point of the trip, book a winter cruise above the Arctic Circle instead.
The ports: Geiranger, Flåm, Bergen, Stavanger, Ålesund and Olden
Every itinerary is slightly different, but these names come up again and again on the cruise lines' Norway pages.
Geiranger. The best moment happens before you land: sailing in along the Geirangerfjord, with waterfalls dropping straight into the water. Princess sells it on exactly that view.
Flåm. The Flåm Railway climbs about 20 kilometres from the fjord to Myrdal, at 866 metres, in roughly an hour, with a stop at the Kjosfossen waterfall, according to its operator, Norway's Best.
Stavanger. The gateway to the Lysefjord and Pulpit Rock (Preikestolen), 604 metres above the water. Visit Norway puts the hike at 4 kilometres up, about 500 metres of ascent and around two hours in each direction. With four hours of walking plus the transfer, there is no slack on a port day.
Bergen. Norway's second city, with the old Hanseatic wharf at Bryggen and the funicular up Mount Fløyen.
Ålesund and Olden. Ålesund for its Art Nouveau centre and the Aksla viewpoint; Olden for the Briksdal Glacier and the Loen Skylift, which Fred. Olsen lists on several of its itineraries.
You can book excursions through the cruise line or on your own with GetYourGuide. The difference that matters: if a cruise line's tour runs late, the ship waits. If yours does, it does not have to.
Single supplement and solo cabins on fjords cruises
A cruise is one of the few holidays where going alone clearly costs more, because fares are set per person, two sharing. P&O Cruises states it in its price notes: per person, based on two adults sharing. We explain the mechanics in the single supplement explained.
Two of the lines sailing from regional UK ports make a point of solo travellers. Fred. Olsen says it has dedicated solo cabins on its smaller ships, solo cruise deals with reduced single supplements and a solo travellers' meeting on board. Ambassador says it has single cabins in selected grades, lower solo supplements on selected sailings, and hosted solo socials on cruises of six nights or more. Solo cabins are few per ship, so if you want one, choose the cabin before the date. If you are weighing up cruises against other trips later in life, our guide to solo travel over 50 covers the wider picture, and singles holidays explains what you are buying when you book one.
Who to go with on a Norwegian fjords cruise
The other way round the supplement is the oldest one: go with someone and split the cabin. It works perfectly until your friend cannot do June.
On TravelMatch you post the trip, say "Norwegian fjords cruise from Newcastle, June 2027", with a destination and dates, or ask to join someone else's. Whoever created the trip decides who joins, after seeing their profile, their compatibility percentage and reviews from people who have travelled with them. Once you are in, the group has a chat, an itinerary, polls to choose excursions and shared expenses to split the cabin or the Flåm Railway; if you want to compare tools for the money side, see split travel costs. Seven nights in a small cabin is a lot of closeness, so agree on early mornings, late nights and onboard budget first; our guide on how to choose travel companions helps. TravelMatch is free and books nothing: everyone books their own place with the cruise line.
The fjords are not going anywhere. What changes is whether you see them from the deck with someone, or from a cabin you paid double for.
On TravelMatch you can post your fjords cruise with your dates and port, and choose who joins after seeing how they like to travel. It is free.
